Christine & Murray Mc Donald from Sydney Australia were in Sri Lanka recently. Murray who was part of the Hornsby Cricket Club team that participated in the Inaugural Colombo Sixes last year was so wrapped up with the places he visited and the experience he had brought his charming wife Christine to experience the diverse sights of Sri Lanka.

Being aware that Sri Lanka is a Sport crazy country.....Christine and Murray were able to collect from their Club Members Netball gear...Balls and playing kits too.

Wanting to make sure that the equipment was for the poorest of poor Girls from the Kurunegala region ... Travelon Ltd in association with Ajith Ekanayake a prominent Sports personality in the Wayamba region a presentation was held at the Welegedera Stadium on the 24th of April 2012 to 72 needy School Netballers in the same region.

The pictures speak the story of appreciation by the Girls .School Heads and Teachers....

Travelon Ltd were delighted to be associated in arranging this Event.....which gave the Children and the Mc Donalds tremendous satisfaction ...... we believe this first will encourage more contributions from others in the near future......

To the Team at Travelon

I just wanted to let you know what a great time my wife Christine and myself had, during our recent trip to Sri Lanka. The organisation, accommodation and travel plan were all spot on and meant that we enjoyed all the sites without rushing and had plenty of time to relax and enjoy the hospitality of the wonderful Sri Lankan people.

It is my second tour with Travelon and I would not use anyone else to plan my trip.

Inaugural tour to Vietnam by Travelon, a huge success

Inaugural Tour Inaugural Tour Inaugural Tour Inaugural Tour Inaugural Tour Inaugural Tour

During the April Holidays Travelon ventured out to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) City with 14 adventurous Sri Lankans led by the tour captain, Director Bandula De Silva.

This was the maiden voyage to Vietnam by Travelon and the management was very keen that the tour should come off with flying colours since this was a new destination. (The "Tenth")

Travelon has already completed tours to Myanmar, Egypt, Kenya, Bhutan, Northern Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia and adding Vietnam as their 10th destination.

The group arrived at Tan Son Nhat airport @ Ho Chi Minh City via a Thai International A340 flight and was met by Mr. Dent Tran Director of Travel Indochina, an excellent ground handling agent in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh). After checking-in at Hotel Elios the group had some free time to overcome jet-lag and change the body clock adjusting to HCMC. (HCMC is + 7 GMT)

An evening City tour to visit the famous Notre Dame Cathedral & the Post Office built during French era and still functioning with past efficiency & glory. Our group became instant Millionaires when they exchanged $ 100 which gave them 2.1 Million Vietnamese Dong (1 US$ = 21,000 Viet. Dong). First dinner in HCMC was at an elegant up-market authentic Vietnamese Restaurant in the Old Qartier (Old Town) which the group appreciated very much.

The next day was an excursion to Chu Chi Tunnels, where unique tactics by Vietnamese Soldiers defected the U.S. Army in 1975. One could also crawl through the tunnel network and taste boiled tapioca & crushed peanuts which was a staple diet of Vietcom during the war.

The next, was a full day excursion to Mekong Delta where the mighty Mekong River unloads her waters to East Sea, after gushing through 5 countries in South East Asia. (Vietnamese avoid using the name SOUTH CHINA SEA because the mainland China tries to claim ownership)

The night's dinner was in a luxury Cruise ship along Saigon River with international food & serene Vietnamese music (all instruments made locally in Vietnam & played by lovely young ladies in the traditional AO DAI dress).

Early next morning the group left by air to Danang (Vietnam Airlines) and on arrival visited the Champa Museum & Marble Museum. Afterwards onwards to Hoi An to discover the historic architecture with Chinese-style shop houses & Japanese covered Bridge. Dinner was at an old style building with Colonial charm. Overnight was at Hoi An Resort with up-market frills & trimmings.

Next morning saw the group travelling via the Hai-van pass which is a picturesque high mountain range which divides the Danang province & Hue. In Hue the group explored the Imperial Citadel & Khai Dinh's tomb. (resembles terracotta warriors of Xian)

The highlights of Hanoi visit was the water puppet show, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum (where Father Ho's body is kept in a 16°C display room for 9 months – from December to August each year, the rest of the time the body is kept in Russia to be treated in special chemicals), one Pillar Pagoda, & fine arts museum.

The most important site visit of Vietnam is considered as the Halong Bay excursion. (Halong Bay is considered the 2nd most important natural wonder of the world). One must stay a night in a Junk Boat (in this case a luxury boat with 10 cabins) to get the true feeling of the Bay. Millions of years ago rock formations from the bottom of the sea resulted in 1969 craggy limestone cliffs emerging from the emerald waters.

In short, if you haven't visited Halong Bay, you haven' t seen Vietnam. Travelon's next tour to Vietnam is scheduled for December' 2012.

The Parents too had a great opportunity to visit the playing venues and see their children in action....and also having a first hand experience of Cricket the way its played in Sri Lanka......

For most this was their first visit to Sri Lanka.....and coming from a harsh winter the Group did well to adjust to the hot and humid conditions very quickly....... As they say the proof of the pudding is in the eating....and the sentiments of the Manager of the Team..Nigel Saunders is appended for easy reference as follows,

"I would like to re-iterate to Travelon my real whole hearted thanks for everything you did for us in order that we had an unbelievable experience in Sri Lanka. I know that everyone will have loads of long lasting memories of your very beautiful Country and the great friends that we made along the way. I know that I am really proud to have met you Eric and Vajira and everyone else at Travelon and will be putting your Company's name forward at every opportunity when speaking to my cricket contacts in England, and insisting that they come to Sri Lanka through your wonderful Company.

When we were putting this tour together worries are natural when you are working with people some 7000 miles away that you have never known before. You must remember that in all the tours we have put together be it South Africa or West Indies we usually do it ourselves and have not used a Company such as yours before. Looking back I am so glad that Ranjit recommended your Company to us.

In the planning stages Vajira soon, through his attention to detail, made my initial worries recede, through his emails and telephone calls to my office here in Cornwall, and I went to the various Parents meetings full of confidence that my contact (Vajira) in Sri Lanka was all that he purported to be. It is fair to say that when I am organizing something, especially when it is something that parents are putting substantial monies into on my say so, relaxing is something I struggle with. I can honestly say that my stress levels were extremely low! Additionally, when I met you any even little concerns fell by the wayside. You were so professional in the way you kept everyone in the party (40) happy, informed and gave us all a very well put together itinerary. The teams that you selected were also well thought about and were of the correct standard, a skill in itself!

All the things that one would normally worry about never came into the picture, although the last day fiasco, the bit that you did not initially organize for us, gave me cause for concern - that is until Travelon got involved. I knew by then that your standards of Client satisfaction was extremely high, and had no real concerns about your organizational skills, although I sighed a relief when the Coach turned up at 0.10 am to take us to the Airport!

I truly believe that I have made some extremely good friends in Sri Lanka, and would like to put into writing my pleasure in inviting you to stay at my house if and when you next come to the UK, and that invitation also goes to Vajira and anyone else connected with Travelon.

I must also congratulate you on your choice of Travel Guide for us, Nissanka was absolutely brilliant and very passionate and knowledgeable about all things about his Country. He also has become a very good friend and in his own way really made our tour to Sri Lanka one never to forget.

I am now going to send some photos to our media person on the Cornwall Cricket Board website and hopefully you and your Company will get a mention in dispatches, the scorecards for all the games are already on the site, sent by me after the games took place. The website address is:

Thank you once again for making my time in Sri Lanka a wonderful experience. When I came in 2010 I really enjoyed it, this time it was so much more enjoyable it is hard to put into words and is all down to the skills of Eric Gauder, Vajira De Silva and everyone else at Travelon - what a brilliant Company to be associated with"

Visit to Kenya from 5th-15th August 2011

Reception in Nairobi
We were received by the representative from Safari Trails at the Nairobi International Airport and we checked in to Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi. Day 1 arrangement was excellent

Commencing of Safari Tour

Day 2.
We left for Amboseli National Park and reached Amboseli Sopa Lodge for lunch. Mr. Raphael our Guide/driver was so friendly and we were very comfortable with him. On the way to Amboseli he provided very informative description of Kenya with us, and also its history, people and wildlife. Cccommodation, food and customer care in Amboseli Sopa Lodge is very good. In the evening we had a game ride and show plenty of animals.

Day 3

We had 2 game rides in Amboseli National Park as planned. We were fortunate to see small lion cub. Very successful visit to the park

Day 4.

We left for Mt. Kenya and reached Mountain Lodge which is maintained by Serena Group. In Nairobi, our guide/driver was changed and Mr. George was taken up in-charge the rest of our journey. He also very good and was caring of us all the time. We found food is excellent in Mountain Lodge (compare to Amboseli). In the night we saw a heard of 19 elephants came to drink water. It was an exciting experience which visitors get rarely in this rainy season to Mt. Kenya.

Day 5-6

From Mountain Lodge, we left for Samburu National park and reached there for late lunch. On the way we crossed equator. Samburu Sopa Lodge is very impressive and unique architecture blend with the environment. Accommodation was very good and staff was very courteous. We saw all animals except cheetahs.

Cottages in Samburu Sopa Lodge

Day 7

We reached Lake Nakuru Lodge at lunch time. It was a rainy day. State of one room for one of our team mates received (Room No.7) was not up to the standard. Room was pretty old with bad smell. But we disregarded it. Lake Nakuru is a fantasy for bird lovers. We could see thousands of flamingos and pelicans. It is a birds’ paradise. We saw lions and black rhinos at Lake Nakuru Park.

Day 8,9,10

We reached to our final destination Masai Mara for lunch from Lake Nakuru. Masai Mara is very spectacular place and the best place to see lions, cheetahs, wilder bees, hyenas, antelopes, gazelles very big vultures,Hippos, crocodiles and so many animals. In the second day evening the park was wet due to rain in previous night. Therefore, our evening game ride was failed because our vehicle was 2 wheel drives. Skilled George managed us to take back to the hotel without stranding. Hence we recommend organizing 4 wheel drive vehicle at least for the Masai Mara, because we lost opportunity in seen rhinos, leopards because our 2 wheel drive vehicle couldn’t reach many places George has planned.

Fig Tree Lodge, where we stayed is marvelous. We got all comforts which is a dream in wild parks. Food was so delicious and we enjoyed Sri Lankan taste.

We had a 10 day marvelous wildlife trip which was beyond our imagination. It was realy worth for the money we spent.

Our sincere appreciation is deserved for Mr. Bandula Silva, Director- Travelon, Staff of Air Arabia and Safari Trails in Nairobi for coordinating, organizing a wonderful safari trip to Kenya which will lasts in our memory for ever. Our team mates were in good health and comfortable throughout the journey. We look forward similar assistance and support from Travelon and their tour operating networks in the world in our future tours too.

Big Thanks for everybody for their untiring effort to make us happy.

Walk the talk: Great potential for sports tourism, says Eric Gauder * Only lip service, little or nothing done by authorities (This Article was extrated from the Island Newspaper article - 24th August)

By Harischandra Gunaratna

There is great potential in promoting Sri Lanka as a destination for sports tourism in the region and the country has missed out on these enormous opportunities which would further boost Sri Lanka as a top tourist destination in the region said former cricketer Eric Gauder, Managing Director, Travelon Ltd.

Realising the potential for sports tourism the country has, Travelon Ltd have embarked on promoting this segment of tourism vigorously and has brought a number international cricket teams to the country in the recent past and they spend much more than what an average tourist spends here per day , he said.

"The authorities have done little or nothing to promote this segment of tourism and other than pay lip service ," he said with regret.

"We just concluded a cricket tournament at the NCC grounds where 10 teams from Sri Lanka, India and Australia participated with around 140 overseas players visiting the country," he added.

The Australians stayed here for a fortnight and visited Kandy and Nuwara Eliya but were disappointed to have missed their trip to the Yala National Park as it was closed, Gauder said.

Gauder, the former Wesley College, NCC and BRC cricketer and popular international cricket commentator has used his contacts to generate more cricket tours by Travelon and a number of teams from India and the national teams of Malaysia, Afghanisthan and Qatar have already visited the country.

Among the top international cricketers who visited the country was former Indian star Venkatesh Prasad, who is the bowling coach of Afghanistan.

Each team would stay in the country for a minimum of two weeks and a number of cricket tours for overseas cricket teams have been planned in the near future and in the coming year starting from this month an average of 20 teams are scheduled to visit the island for tournaments organised by Travelon, he said.

There is a lot of money coming into our coffers as ground hire charges, umpires fees, meals during matches and accommodation which are met by the visiting teams and they will also spend on shopping and travelling to various sites of tourist interest, he said.

The cricket tournaments would feature a combination of cricketers of yesteryear and current players and it would be a great opportunity for them to play a game of cricket and get-together to renew old friendships and forge new ones, said Guader.

"It is not only cricket tours that Travelon will promote in future, but also netball, sailing. rowing, soccer,vVolleyball etc as there are so many untapped opportunities," Gauder said.

Bandula De Silva, Director, Travelon Ltd, said that the sports teams on tour would be joined by their families and the number of persons visiting the country as tourists would multiply.

Murray Mc Donald of Hornsby District Club of New South Wales was overwhelmed with the beauty of Sri Lanka and the standard of cricket and the facilities offered. He said " I would certainly visit your beautiful country again for a longer tour."

Two leading young Burmese film stars Aung Thuya Ko and Thazin Zaw Win visited the island recently to gain a first hand knowledge on how Sri Lanka is celebrating the 2600 year of Sambuddha Jayanthi and possibilities of promoting tourism between the two countries. The duo visited the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya and Gangaramaya in Colombo and were highly impressed with what they experienced.

The duo have acted in a number of top films to their credit and are very popular among the youth in Myanmar.

"We will do our utmost to promote tourism between Sri Lanka and Burma, particularly religious tourism as there are large numbers wanting to visit Buddhist religious sites in Sri Lanka as Sri Lanka and Burma are two pre dominant Buddhist countries," Thazin and Aung told The Island Financial Review.

Their visit was made possible by Sri Lanka’s Charge d’affaires in Myanmar Niramala Paranawithana and Sri Lanka Tourism and Travelon Ltd, one of Sri Lanka’s leading travel agents and inbound and outbound tours to Myanmar were the ground handlers.

With the liberalisation of travel restrictions in Burma, a large number of Burmese have started travelling after a lapse of many years. There is a huge market for religious tourism in the country and they, unlike other Buddhist pilgrims, are very keen on going to places where Lord Buddha had visited. Sri Lanka is a key destination for this segment of the market and already Travelon Ltd has had a number of Burmese tour groups visiting Sri Lanka in the recent past.

Bandula De Silva, Director Operations Travelon and Aye Kyaw, Managing Director Rubyland Tours Yangon, expressed confidence that their alliance would bring an increasing number of Burmese tourists (leisure and religious) to Sri Lanka.

Aye Kyaw in a meeting with The Island Financiel Review in Bangkok recently, said that Rubyland Tours was all out to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination in Burma and has confirmed that he would accompany a team of top travel journalists from Burma to Sri Lanka next month.
